Prof. M Zahidul Haque
Agricultural extension is a discipline of providing need and demand-based knowledge to farming communities in a systematic, participatory manner, to increase their production, income, and improving the quality of life. Extension is essentially an education system aimed to bringing about positive behavioral changes among farmers.
In modern days Agricultural Extension is much broader and more diverse. It provides a broad range of services – advisory, technology transfer, training, information and promotion on a wide variety of disciplines like agriculture, health and nutrition, environment and climatic adaptation, social organization and the like.
Agricultural extension is being taught as a major in under and post-graduate levels in different agricultural universities of Bangladesh. There are only a few locally written text books of agricultural extension in our country. The book under review is actually a text book written by highly experienced teachers of agricultural extension who are working in different agricultural universities of Bangladesh.
The lead author of ‘Agricultural Extension Education’ Prof. Mohammad Hossain Bhuiyan has been working at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka for the last several years. The second author Prof. Dr. Md. Abdul Momen Mia is also an experienced extension education teacher of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh while two other authors, Prof. Dr. Md. Golam Rabbani Akanda of Patuakhali Science and Technology University and Md. Abul Basher of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University are well conversant on the subject.
The book written by the four experienced extension professionals has covered almost all the important topics of agricultural extension beginning from history and background of agricultural extension education ending at leadership and group dynamics in the extension system. The book contains 11 chapters with detailed discussion on various segments of extension education and extension services.
The ‘Agricultural Extension Education’ under its elegant cover page is an excellent handbook for students, extension personnel and social researchers. Perhaps inclusion of a glossary of extension terms at the end of the book could add further to its usefulness. The book in neat white print is well prepared and presented.
