Trade bodies of the country’s apparel sector on Tuesday urged the political parties concerned to withdraw their May 8-9 hartal for the sake of the readymade garment industry and the economy as a whole. “A Chinese delegation 20 international brands is scheduled to visit Dhaka on May 9. If there’s a hartal, the aim of the visit will remain unachieved,” BGMEA and BKMEA said in a joint statement. The visit of Chinese trade delegation in the critical period of the country’s RMG sector is very important. “Their purpose of the visit will be hampered due to the hartal.”
The delegation will land at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 11am and it will be tough to bring them to hotel safely if there is a hartal, the statement said.
It also said relatives of the Savar building collapse are moving from one place to another for treatment purposes. “So, hartal will add miseries to them.”
The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) also urged the all parties concerned to refrain from enforcing hartal. UNB
