Hand over Sundarbans arsonists to police: Minister

Dhaka – Environment and Forests Minister Anwar Hossain Manju on Sunday urged all to hand over to law enforcers those involved in setting fire to the Sundarbans, saying stern action will be taken against them.
He made the call while speaking at a meeting at the Sharankhola upazila parishad auditorium after visiting the parts of the Sundarbans that were affected in recent fire incidents.The minister also said the government is very much sincere about protecting the world’s largest mangrove forest.
Earlier in the day, Manju visited the fire-hit Dhansagar area under Chandpai range of the Sundarbans East Zone by a helicopter.
Meanwhile, police have detained four more people for interrogation in connection with the fire incidents in the Sundarbans.
A police team arrested them from Uttar Rajapur village in Sharankhola upazila in the early hours of Sunday, said officer-in-charge of Sharankhola Police Station M Shah Alam Miah.
The arrestees were identified as Rustam Howlader, 50, of Uttar Rajapur, and Nazrul Islam, 32, Sohel Hawlader, 22, Ishaque Hawlader, 50, of Paschim Rajapur village.
With this, six people have so far been detained in connection with the Sundarbans fires.
However, police could not arrest any of the accused named in the cases filed by the Forest Department.
Four fire incidents took place in the Sundarbans in a span of only one month from March 27.
The latest fire that broke out at Tulatala of the Chandpai range on Wednesday afternoon was extinguished around 12 noon on Saturday, after 66 hours.
Three cases were filed against 22 people in connection with the four fire incidents
