HC orders death row convict Nur Hossain’s graft case trial

Dhaka, July 10 – The High Court yesterday cancelled a lower court verdict that exonerated Nur Hossain, a death-row convict in Narayanganj seven-murder case, from a corruption case.
The HC also directed the lower court to finish the trial of the corruption case against Nur Hossain in next six months.
In response to a revision petition, the HC bench comprising Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice KM Hafizul Alam came up with the order.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the revision petition on April 23 in 2015 challenging the lower court verdict.
After preliminary hearing, the HC had on June 28 in 2015 issued a rule asking the authorities concerned of the government to explain why the exemption order of the lower court should not be scrapped.
After holding final hearing on the rule, the HC yesterday came up with the order.
Now-defunct Bureau of Anti-Corruption Commission filed the case with Narayanganj Police Station against Nur Hossain on November 28, 2002 for misappropriating Tk five lakh of the land development tax when he was the chairman of Naraynganj’s Siddhirganj union parishad in 1997.
The ACC submitted the charge sheet of the case to the lower court on July 19, 2011. But Narayanganj special judges court on January 30, 2013 exonerated Nur from the case on the ground that filing of the case was delayed.
Advocate Md Shafikul Islam appeared for the ACC and Deputy Attorney General AKM Aminuddin Manik represented the state. – Staff Reporter
