Housewife convicted for torturing domestic help

Dhaka – The Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-3 of Dhaka yesterday sentenced a housewife to life term imprisonment in a case filed for torturing an 11-year- old domestic help and dumping her into a dustbin assuming her dead in September 2013.Judge Jayasree Samaddar of the court also fined the convict Nawrin Jahan Nodi Tk 1 lakh in presence of the convict. The money will be handed over to the victim’s family. The court acquitted Nodi’s mother Ishrat Jahan as the charges brought against her were not proved.
Soon after the judgment, Aduri, now 15 and her mother Safia Begum expressed satisfaction over the verdict. Besides, on behalf of the complainant, Executive Director of Bangladesh National Women Layers Association, Salma Ali said, justice has been prevailed through this verdict.
The case was filed with Pallabi Police Station on September 26, 2013 accusing Nodi and her mother of torturing Aduri. Police arrested Nadi on the same day. On September 23, Aduri was found unconscious in a severely malnourished state, riddled with injuries and scars near a dustbin in the capital's DOHS Pallabi.
On October 29, police submitted the charge sheet of the case to the court. Later, on June 6, 2014, the court framed charges against the two accused persons. – Special Correspondent
