Dhaka Jan 27 – BNP mayoral candidate for Dhaka North City Corporation election Tabith Awal on Monday announced his poll manifesto giving emphasis to turn the capital city of Dhaka into an intelligent city by controlling the mosquito menace, curbing air pollution and ensuring better traffic management. He unveiled his poll manifesto through a press conference at Emanuel Banquet Hall in Gulshan at 10:30 am, a day after his opponent ruling Awami League mayoral candidate Atiqul Islam announced his election manifesto.
There are elections 95 pledges in manifesto under 19 sections where Tabith assured the city people for decentralization of citizen services to the ward levels and ensure safety and security of their lives and properties.
The BNP candidate called upon the city dwellers to cast their votes for the sheaf of paddy, the poll symbol of the party, to implement his pledges.
In his poll manifesto, he also gave importance to improve public transport and waste management to build his dreamed intelligent city.
Replying to a question, he said would implement the manifesto taking the support of the people even by staying on the opposition side. ‘It’ll be if the people remain by my side,’ he added.
Tabith, also the son of business tycoon Abdul Awal Mintoo, said he would take steps to ensure the rights and security of citizens.
He accused the incumbent government and mayors of their failure to control the mosquito menace and promised to tackle the issue efficiently.
‘If elected, I’ll carry out mosquito repellent activities throughout the year. I’ll also work for reducing traffic jam and will take effective steps to stop air pollution in the city,’ he said.
The BNP candidate sought cooperation from all concern to elect him as the next mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation.
The elections to two Dhaka city corporations are going to be held on February 1. This year, Dhaka ranked third in the list of cities with worst air as the capital city has been grappling with air pollution for years.
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal President ASM Abdur Rab, Nagarik Oikya convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna and Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury, among others, were also present.
Meanwhile, while carrying out electioneering in the afternoon, Tabith called upon the voters to go to the polling centres with courage and resist any move to manipulate the elections.
“If you don’t go to the polling centres, the opponent will be able to manipulate the elections. So, you must go to the polling centres. You are my forces,” he added.
Speaking at a roadside rally at Uttara, he recalled that he took part in the election as part of the movement to free party chairperson Khaleda Zia and restore the democracy. – Staff Reporter
