Al Hilal Bank uncovers internal fraud worth up to $173m

Abu Dhabi’s Al Hilal Bank has uncovered internal fraud worth more than Dhs500m ($136m), according to reports Friday. Employees of the Islamic institution have been accused of withdrawing funds from dormant customer accounts. The funds were transferred from Al Hilal accounts to bogus accounts before being withdrawn, according to the sources. Read More »

Santander rescues rival Banco Popular from collapse

Spanish bank Banco Popular has been rescued from the brink of collapse by larger rival Santander for one euro. Buying Banco Popular will cost Santander 7bn euros (£6.1bn) – around 2bn euros more than analysts had expected.
