Officials at the Dhaka airport have seized a large consignment of contraband gold from a flight that flew in from Malaysia.“We found 120 gold bars hidden under a seat of Regent Airways on Friday morning,” customs’ Joint Commissioner Sohel Rahman told bdnews24.com.He said the gold was worth about Tk 70 million in the open market. No arrests have been made so far over the seizure.Bangladesh has become an important conduit on the gold smuggling route, the Asia-Pacific Group (APG) on Money Laundering said recently.Gold seizures, especially in airports of Bangladesh, are at an all-time high.On Feb 2 this year, 61 kgs of gold was seized from the toilet of a Bangladesh Biman airlines arriving from Dubai. Many such seizures have been reported from Dhaka and Chittagong airports. But much of this contraband gold coming into Bangladesh seems headed for India, where the demand is huge.Indian states bordering Bangladesh, like West Bengal, have also reported huge seizures.Indian revenue intelligence officials say at least 11 to 12 India-Bangladesh cartels are operating in Middle East and South-east Asia, from where much of the contraband gold is sourced.
