14-day programme to observe Zia’s 33rd death anniversary


Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has chalked out a 14-day programme to mark the 33rd death anniversary of its founder Ziaur Rahman. The observance of the death anniversary of Zia will begin on May 27 and end on June 9. On May 30, 1981, Ziaur Rahman was assassinated by a group of disgruntled army officers at Chittagong Circuit House. Zia founded the Bangladesh Nationalist Party in 1978. The programmes were finalised at a joint meeting of the party held at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office with BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in the chair. After the meeting, Fakhrul said the programmes include holding discussions, wearing black badges, publishing posters and supplements in newspapers and distributing food among the destitute. Besides, BNP will arrange a discussion at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh on May 29 in observance of the day. Party flags and black flags will be hoisted at the party office across the country, including Nayapaltan central office, on May 30 on the occasion. Besides, leaders and activists of the party, led by party chairperson Khaleda Zia, will also place wreaths at the grave of Ziaur Rahman at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on the day. Jatiyatabadi Ulema Dal will organise a Doa Mahfil on the premises of Zia’s grave while Doctors’ Association of Bangladesh (DAB) will provide free medical treatment and medicine in front of the party’s central office. BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia will distribute food among the destitute and poor at various spots across the capital on May 30, 31 and June 1. The joint meeting was attended, among others, by BNP chairperson’s advisers Shamsuzzaman Dudu and Dr AZM Zahid Hossain, and joint secretaries general M Shahjahan and Ruhul Kabir Rizvi. – UNB
