2 alleged robbers hurt in ‘gunfight’ with cops


Two alleged robbers, arrested in connection with the robbery attempt in two local jewellery shops, were injured in a gunfight between police and their cohorts in the port city of Chittagong early Wednesday.
The injured were identified as M Hasan Jamadar, 32, and M Manik alias Kana Manik, 28. They were arrested from the capital on December 14 for their involvement in the robbery. A sub-inspector and two constables were also injured in the gun battle, police said.Officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station Mahiuddin Selim said a police team along with Hasan and Manik went to Firingibazar Bridgeghat area of the city to recover firearms.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, their accomplices opened fire on them, forcing police to fire back.
Hasan and Manik received bullet injuries during the gunfight that also left three policemen injured.
A revolver, a gun, three bullets and five cartridges were also recovered from the spot.
Meanwhile, police in an overnight drive on Tuesday arrested seven more people, including four women, in connection with the incident.
The arrested are Faisal Hossain Sagar, Halim Hawladar Nayon, M Riaz, Ruma Begum, Julekha Begum, Hasina Begum and Khorsheda Akhtar. Two foreign pistols and 10 bullets were also recovered from their possession.
With this, a total 12 people have so far been arrested in this connection.
Earlier, on December 13, some robbers tried to storm into the two jewellery shops –‘Aparupa’ and ‘Guinea Gold’ — at GPO intersection in the city.
As the staff of the shops and local people stood against their attempt, the muggers blasted three crude bombs and hurriedly fled the scene, leaving 10 people injured.
Later, one of the injured died at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) on Saturday night. – UNB
