2 siblings get life for fratricide in Sylhet


A court here on Tuesday sentenced two siblings to life term imprisonment each for killing their brother in 1998.The court also fined the convicts, Joynal Miah, 58, son of Abdur Rahman, a resident of Barobando village in the city, and his brother Anu Miah, 50, Tk 1000 each in default to suffer two months more jail.According to the prosecution, three siblings—Joynal Miah, Anu Miah and Nunu Miah—swooped on another brother Fazlu Miah over a land-related dispute at Barobando village under Kotwali Police Station on August 24, 1998.

At one stage, they chopped Fazlu indiscriminately with sharp weapons, leaving him critically injured.Later, Fazlu was rushed to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.Samsul Abedin, elder brother of Fazlu Miah, filed a case with Kotwali Police Station accusing five people, including the three siblings and their father Abdur Rahman, on the same day.Later, police submitted a charge sheet against the five accused to a court after investigation.After examining the witnesses and evidence, Sylhet Metropolitan Session’s Judge Akbar Hossain Mridha handed down the verdict acquitting two accused Nunu Miah and Nasir.Abdul Rahman died earlier.-UNB, Sylhet
