20-party’s peaceful hartal in Gaibandha


A half-day hartal, called by BNP-led 20-party alliance protesting police swoop on its procession, was observed peacefully in the district today (Sunday).Anisuzzaman Khan Babu, convener of the district unit of the 20-party alliance, announced the shutdown from a rally on Saturday.No picketing by the party activists was seen anywhere in the district.Vehicular movement on the town roads was almost normal in the morning.No long-route buses departed from the district town.A large number of police personnel were deployed to fend off any trouble.The shutdown began at 6.00am and ended at 12.00pm.Leaders and activists of the 20-party staged a demonstration on Saturday as part of the central committee’s decision to bring out a procession as Khaleda Zia was denied holding rally in Gazipur.Police charged baton when the procession reached Circular Road, leaving district BNP president Anisuzzaman Khan Babu, office secretary Abdul Kafi Mandal and other leaders injured. -UNB, Gaibandha
