Chittagong, Oct 5 – A total of 250 political leaders from the Bangladesh Awami League (AL), the Bangladesh Nationali
st Party (BNP) and the Jatiya Party of Chittagong Division came to one platform in Chittagong Thursday to pledge for nonviolent and peaceful elections. The atmosphere was festive at the regional launch of the ‘Shantite Bijoy’ (Win with Peace) campaign with enthusiastic participation by the political leaders of the administrative. The programme was held at Hotel Radisson Blue Chittagong Bay View in a port city.
At the launch, political leaders of Awami League, BNP and Jatiya Party of stood together in support of peace and harmony, and vowed against violence.
At the event, Mafizur Rahman, general secretary of Chittagong South District Awami League said, to practice democratic attitude and tolerance, a positive environment would be created. He believes – the upcoming national election will be peaceful. Dr Shahadat Hossain, president of Chittagong City BNP expressed gratitude to Democracy International, USAID and UKaid for organising such programme. Prioritising the level playing field, he stated, it is possible to build a corruption-free, democratic country by ensuring good governance. He expressed his hope to enable the positive environment for peaceful elections.
Additionally, Jafarul Islam Chowdhury, president, Chittagong South District BNP; Abul Hashem Bakkar, general secretary, Chittagong City BNP; Solaiman Alam Sheth, president, Chittagong City Jatiyo Party; Prof. Sheikh Md. Mohiuddin, former Vice – president, Chittagong South District BNP; Prodip Das, organizing secretary, Chittagong South District AL; Bedarul Alam Choudhury, education and human resources affairs Secretary, Chittagong North District AL; Nazrul Islam Talukder, member, Chittagong North District AL and Md. Salahuddin, former vice-president, Chittagong North District BNP spoke at the event. Civil society members and social-cultural activists of Chittagong participated in the programme.
With the national elections approaching, the Win with Peace campaign will engage and raise awareness among registered political parties, candidates, and citizens in Bangladesh on the importance of peaceful elections and tolerant politics. The campaign is providing the 16-crore people of Bangladesh with a platform to raise their voice to demand peace, harmony, and tolerant politics. The campaign is bringing together political leaders and citizens of Bangladesh in peace rallies, face to face dialogues with candidates, roundtable meetings, and workshops across Bangladesh, said a DI press release.
The Win with Peace campaign is implemented under a Strengthening Political Landscape (SPL) project implemented by Democracy International and co-funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (UK Aid), the press release said
