26 points threatened by river erosion


The Water Development Board (WDB) has identified 26 points on seven rivers as vulnerable to river erosion during the current monsoon.The cost for stabilizing the river banks is estimated to be Taka 460 crore.Of which Taka 20 crore has been allocated for six projects so far.
These points are Dwarika Point of the Shugandha River that includes the Bir Shreshtho Captain Mohiuddin Jahangir Bridge, Barisal airport, Meghna Protection Embankment, Beltala Ferry Ghat in the city, Talltala Road at nCharbaria and a few others.On the other hand, erosion on the Kirtankhola river is threatening the Beltala Water Treatment Plant, Ferry Ghat and Shipyard.
Zahiruddin Ahmed, Executive Engineer of WDB, said the process of tendering is on and work will start on a priority basis as soon as possible. -BSS, Barisal
