A court here on Wednesday sentenced five people, including a woman, to life term imprisonment and three women to one year for killing a man over land related dispute in 2005.
The lifers are Abdul Hamid, 40, son of Afzal Hossain, Uzzal Miah, 23, son of late Rais Uddin, his brothers Helal Miah, 40 and Rabbani, 45, and their sister Rehena Begum alias Rina, 47. All the convicts were fined Tk 10,000 each, in default, will have to suffer one year more rigorous imprisonment.
The convicts who were awarded one year jail are Roksana Begum, 28, wife of Abul Hamid, Rashida Begum, 30, wife of Helal Uddin, and Nadia Begum, 30. daughter of Abul Hossain. They were fined Tk 1,000 each, in default, will have to suffer one month more imprisonment.
According to the prosecution, Abdul Aziz, a farmer of Pabai village of Purba Dhala upazila of the district, had an enmity with the convicts of the same village over the ownership of a piece of land.
As a sequel to the enmity, the convicts went to the disputed land for taking its possession and attacked Aziz on February 4, 2005.
At one stage, they beat Aziz mercilessly, leaving him seriously injured.
Aziz was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where he succumbed to his injures on February 5, 2005.
Jahanara, wife of the deceased, filed a murder case against the eight people.
Police submitted charge sheet against them on September 26, 2005.
After examining the records and eight witnesses, Additional District and Sessions Judge Abdul Hamid handed down the verdict.
