6 testify on N’ganj abduction-murders in public hearing

Six people gave their depositions during a public hearing at the Circuit House here on Monday on the sensational seven murders. Of them, Jalal Uddin, son of Mujibul Haque of Masdair in the city’s Fatullah area, claimed himself to be a witness to the abductions of Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam and six others, saying Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) members picked up the seven on April 27. After giving his deposition before the seven-member probe body, formed following a Higher Court order, Jalal told reporters that he was present near the abduction place on the day. He said he was urinating beside a heap of garbage at Lamapara on the Dhaka-Narayanganj link road when the abduction took place. A Rab car and a black 12 to 13-seated microbus were positioned earlier near the spot, he said, adding that the Rab members at one stage stopped two cars. Five people, including Nazrul, were inside a white-coloured car while Advocate Chandan Kumar Sarker and his car driver were inside another car, he said. The elite force members dragged those people into the black microbus and sprayed something inside it that made the people senseless, added Jalal. Unlike Jalal, the rest of the people who went to the Circuit House to make their depositions did not claim themselves to be the witness to the incident. However, they demanded punishment of prime suspect Nur Hossain and the three former Rab officials. The seven-member probe body formed to investigate law enforcers’ alleged involvement in the Narayanganj seven-murder started recording the statement around 10 am. District Bar Association leaders met the probe body in the morning and requested the committee not to record any statement defending the killers. They said they will give depositions in the next phase of the public hearing to be held on May 15. The lawyers observed one and half hours of work abstention in the morning demanding immediate arrest of the killers. They also staged demonstrations on the court premises at noon. Meanwhile, police arrested another associate of Nur Hossain from Azibpur of Siddhirganj on Monday evening. The arrestee was identified as Rafiqul Islam Ratan, also general secretary of Siddhirganj chapter of inter-district truck drivers union of which Nur is the president. The probe committee recorded statements of family members and relatives of the seven victims, including Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam and senior lawyer Chandan Sarker, at the DC office on Saturday. The Public Administration Ministry on Wednesday formed the probe panel, headed by Md Shahjahan Ali Mollah, an additional secretary to the Public Administration Ministry, in compliance with a High Court order. On Monday, the High Court issued a suo moto rule asking the government to form a seven-member committee to investigate the allegation that Rab personnel were involved in the killing of Nazrul Islam and six others. Panel mayor Nazrul Islam, his three associates, driver, senior lawyer Chandan Kumar Sarker and his driver were killed after their abduction in Narayanganj on April 27. Nazrul Islam, his three associates and driver, were abducted by miscreants from Fatullah area of the city on April 27. Hours after their abduction, senior lawyer at district Judge’s Court Chandan Kumar Sarker and his driver were also abducted on their way to capital Dhaka. Three days into their abduction, the bodies of six people, including that of Nazrul and Chandan Kumar, were recovered from the Shitalakhya and Dhaleshwari rivers on April 30 while body of another body was recovered the following day. – UNB
