Thirty-four teachers of Shahjalal University for Science and Technology (SUST), including renowned author Prof Dr Muhammed Zafar Iqbal, resigned from their administrative posts on Monday demanding resignation of their Vice Chancellor.
Campus sources said a delegation of teachers of a pro-liberation war platform, led by its convener Prof Dr Samsul Alam Chowdhury, co-convener Prof Mostabur Rahman and Prof Dr Nazia Chowdhury went to the university registrar building around 11 am and submitted their resignations to Registrar Ishfaqul Hossain.
Dr Zafar Iqbal was the director of Institute of Information Technology.
Acting proctor Emdadul Haque said all the 35 teachers quit the 37 administrative posts. A meeting in this regard will be held later in the day, he added.
Expressing non-confidence in Vice Chancellor Prof Aminul Haque Bhuiyan, a group of teachers under the banner of Pro-Liberation War platform Earlier on Wednesday gave an ultimatum to the VC to resign by Sunday. Or else, they threatened to quit the administrative posts of the university on Monday.
On April 13, an altercation broke out when 19 teachers from Physics and Geography and Environment departments of the university went to hold talks with the VC over space allocation between the two departments.
Following the altercation, Prof Dr Syed Badiuzzaman Faruk of Physics and Prof Dr Sharif Mohammad Sharafuddin of Geography and Environment resigned as heads of the two departments.
A deadlock was created on the campus following the resignation of the two department’s heads. – UNB
