B’deshi experts study nuclear project designs in Russia

A group of Bangladeshi experts from Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) visited one of the latest nuclear power plants- Leningrad NPP-II in Russia. Earlier they visited Novovoronezh NPP-II and machine building plant ZIO-Podolsk. The visit was arranged under the scientific and technical mission framework, adopted by Russia and Bangladesh.
Bangladesh delegation was accompanied by a team of Jordanian nuclear experts during the visit. Jordan also has signed an agreement with Russia for construction of their first ever nuclear power plant in the country.Manzurul Haque, Member of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission said, ‘It is important for us to comprehensively analyse technology and other aspects of latest nuclear plants to find the most suitable for Bangladesh.’
‘Bangladesh needs a safe, reliable and at the same time affordable power source. So it is our task to select the technology which best answers to our need’ he added.
Leningrad NPP-II is under construction and, Novovoronezh NPP-II is under trial operation. Both of them are using 3+ generation technology. The Novovoronezh NPP-II is expected to be connected to the grid this year and will be the world’s first 3+ generation nuclear power plant.
Members of the delegation were briefed on the technical characteristics of the plant, methods of installation of main equipments and other facilities of the projects. The experts had the opportunity to study safety system, operational principles of cooling towers, VVER-1200 and VVER- TOI reactors’ designs and basic differences between them.
Both Leningrad NPP-II and Novovoronezh NPP-II are using different models of VVER 1200 (AES 206) technology. Bangladesh is considering them as the reference for Rooppur nuclear power plant. VVER-TOI is the export version of those and is designed in the most advanced information format. – Rosatom PR
