Dhaka – Detectives have arrested seven members of a syndicate involved in making fake currencies from different areas of the city. They also recovered Indian counterfeit notes worth Rupees 3,760,000, Bangladeshi fake notes of Tk 11,50,000 and fake currency-making materials from their possession.The arrestees are Rafiqul Islam alias Khasru, Liakat Hossain alias Jakir, Rafijul Islam, Sohagh, Alauddin, Shahidul Islam and Muzammel Haque.A team of Detective Branch (DB, East) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) conducted a drive in Mohammadpur thana area on Monday and arrested Rafiqul, Liakat and Rafijul.Another DB team (West) conducted a drive under the footbridge of Farmgate in the afternoon of the day and arrested four others — Sohagh, Alauddin, Shahidul and Muzammel.Briefing reporters at the DMP Media Centre on Tuesday, Joint Commissioner (DB) Abdul Baten said fake notes are usually circulated in city markets ahead of Eid and other festivals.The arrested gangsters had been involved in making and selling fake currencies in the capital, he said, adding that they had planned to distribute huge quantity of counterfeit notes ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.Police will set up control rooms in all the cattle markets in the city, the DB officer said. “Fake currency detectors will be available in the police control rooms as well as in the offices of cattle market lessees.”UNB news agency
