ACC to investigate furniture purchases for Nuke Plant Project

Dhaka, Oct 18 – The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Thursday decided to conduct investigation against those who were involved in the alleged graft of purchasing furniture, pillow and other household items for Green City housing project under Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant Project.A three-member body headed by Deputy Director Md Nasir Uddin has been formed to investigate the matter. The other two members of the probe body are—assistant director Atiqur Rahman and deputy assistant director Mohammad Shahjahan Miraz.
ACC public relations officer (PRO) Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya yesterday confirmed the matter of conducting the investigation against Rooppur project scam by the commission.
The anti-watchdog body took the decision after the Housing and Public Works has suspended 16 officials due to their involvement in the Rooppur Power Plant pillow graft case.
In a report signed by Deputy Secretary of Housing and Public Works Ministry Zillur Rahman had on Tuesday stated that the ministry had suspended 16 officials due to their involvement in the Rooppur Power Plant pillow graft case.
The report was submitted before the High Court bench of Justice Tariq ul Hakim and Justice Md Shohrowardi through the attorney general office. The HC bench is likely to hold hearing on the report on next Sunday.
The suspended officials are- Md Shafiqul Islam, Md Abu Sayeed, Md Shahin Uddin, Md Jahidul Kabir, Md Rafiquzzaman, Suman Kumar Nandi, Md Fazle Haque, Md Rawshan Ali, Md Aminul Islam, Md Rubel Hussain, Md Tarek, Ahamed Sazzad Khan, Md Mostafa Kamal, Md Tahazzud Hossain, and AKM Zillur Rahman.
According to the report, departmental cases were also filed against 14 other officials over their involvement in mishandling the billing payment.
Earlier, on May 19 two probe committees were formed and instructed to submit a report stating the government’s action taken against the involved officials within October 20.
According to the report, in the housing project called Green City of the RNPP project, the contractors were supposed to charge nearly Tk113.62 crore to supply furniture and electronic gadgets on several floors of four 20-storey buildings.
However, the furnishing articles and electronic gadgets supplied were worth around Tk77.22 crore– around Tk36.4 crore less than the estimated sum of money.
It was also reported that a single pillow was bought for Tk5, 957, and the cost to move that to the apartment was Tk760.
An electric stove reportedly cost Tk7, 747 and the movers were paid Tk6, 650 to move it upstairs from the bottom floor.
An electric kettle was bought at Tk5, 313, and its moving cost was Tk2, 945, and an electric iron bought at Tk4, 154 was moved upstairs spending Tk2, 945.
The housing project started on July 19, 2016 and is supposed to be completed by 2022. – Staff Reporter
