AL out to hold people ‘hostage with muscle power’: BNP


Dhaka – The BNP on Friday alleged that the ruling party is now out to hold the country’s people ‘hostage using muscle power’UNB news agency reported.“Though Awami League talks about democracy, it hardly cares about democratic principles. It wants to establish its supremacy with terrorism and keep people hostage by using muscle power,” BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said in a statement.
The statement was issued condemning the attacks on Jamalpur’s Durmut Union existing chairman and BNP president Rasheduzzaman Apu, his son and brother’s house by ruling party men over Union Parishad polls.
Fakhrul said though there was a schedule for the election to Durmut Union on Thursday, the High Court has recently issued a rule staying the polls over complexity about its boundary demarcation.
“Awami League leaders and activists had been blaming BNP for the stay on the election. As a manifestation of their anger, terrorists led by ruling party chairman candidate Juber Ali, attacked Apu yesterday (Thursday), causing serious injuries to his head,” he said.
The BNP leader also alleged that the ruling party men also gave Apu’s son Anik a tremendous thrashing and attacked his brother’s house. “The entire country has now turned into a hotspot of terrorists.”
He demanded the government immediately arrest the attackers and mete out exemplary punishment to them.
