AL’s election move is to send BNP leaders to jail: Abbas

Dhaka-BNP senior leader Mirza Abbas on Sunday said Awami League’s preparation for the next parliamentary elections means ‘sending BNP leaders and activists to jail’.“Awami League’s new general secretary has said their party will take quick preparation for the next polls. Their preparation means putting all BNP leaders and activists behind bars,” he told a protest rally.
Abbas, a BNP standing committee member, further said, “Awami League is thinking if the BNP leaders and activists can be kept in jail then who else will come up to contest the polls!”
Dhaka city unit BNP arranged the programme at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh protesting the punishment against BNP vice chairman Sadeque Hossain Khoka in a ‘false’ case and confiscating his wealth.
Abbas said Khoka was not allowed to defend himself returning home from the USA in the cases filed against him.
As Khoka is out of the country, he said the government has confiscated his wealth. “Not only Khoka’s assets, but also that of the whole nation has already been confiscated by this regime.”
He said ruling party men in the name of development are making huge money. “They’ve inflated their pockets plundering public money. They’ve also emptied BNP men’s pockets.”
Abbas warned that no government can cling to power by indulging in corruption and resorting to repression.
Accusing the government of snatching people’s democratic rights, he said no one can go unpunished by depriving people of their rights. “You’ll surely be punished someday for it, and the history won’t forgive you.”
About the Election Commission formation, he said it is necessary to know the intention of those who will form the search committee to form a neural Election commission.
