More courts on Monday issued either arrest warrants or summons against him in separate cases filed for his disparaging remarks about Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Besides, freedom fighters staged demonstrations in various places across the country protesting his remarks and demanding his arrest.
Three courts –- one in Dhaka, another in Pirojpur and the third in Khulna -– issued warrants for the arrest of Tarique, also the eldest son of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman and its current chairperson Khaleda Zia, in as many defama tion cases filed against him.On the other hand, courts in Chittagong, Dinajpur, Kushtia, Meherpur and Barguna asked Tarique to appear before those on particular days to explain his comments against Bangabandhu. The summons were issued after separate defamation cases were filed against the BNP senior vice chairman.
Another case was filed with a court in Chandpur against him on the same charge. However, the court did not pass any order in this regard.
Earlier, a number of courts either issued arrest warrants or summonses against Tarique in separate defamation cases.
On December 15, BNP senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman called Sheikh Mujibur Rahman a “great Razakar” for what he said disbanding Awami League calling it a “party of thugs”, and claimed that Bangabandhu’s family had no contribution to the country’s Liberation War.
Tarique, addressing a discussion marking the Victory Day in London said, ”Awami League claims that it’s a party of War of Independence, but it’s Sheikh Mujib who had banned Awami League describing it as a party of thugs. So, if it’s a party of Liberation War, Sheikh Mujib is a great Razakar for obliterating Awami League.”
Meanwhile, demonstrations were staged in many places across the country on Monday protesting the derogatory remarks of Tarique against Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and demanding his arrest.
Protests were reported from Sylhet, Brahmanbaria, Sunamganj, Chuadanga, Faridpur, Chapainawabganj and Panchagarh. – UNB
