Police ASI Suja murder accused, killed in Pabna ‘gunfight’

Dhaka – Rubel Hossain, the prime accused in the Assistant Sub-inspector Sujaul Islam Suja murder case, was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Padmar Char in Ishwardi upazila of outlying Pabna district early Wednesday, Unb news agency reported.Officer-in-charge of Ishwardi Police Station Biman Kumar Das said police arrested Rubel, son of Idris Ali, a resident of Diarbaghail village of the upazila, from near his house at about 11:00pm on Tuesday.
Later, a team of police along with Rubel conducted a drive in Padmar Char area to arrest another accused in the case, Ibra Hossain, at about 3:00am.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, associates of Rubel, who were staying there, opened fire on them, forcing police to fire back that triggered a gun battle.
Rubel was caught in the line of fire and seriously injured while his other associates managed to flee the scene.
He was rushed to Ishwardi Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.
Police recovered two revolvers and two rounds of bullet from the spot.
Earlier on October 5 last year, police recovered the body of Sujaul Islam Suja, ASI of the police station, from a field at Pakshi in the upazila.
‘Robber’ killed in Jessore
Meanwhile, an alleged robber was killed in a ‘gunfight’ between his cohorts and police at Satighata Bazar on the Jessore-Manirampur road in Sadar upazila early Wednesday. Identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.
Officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station Elias Hossain said on a tip-off that a gang of robbers were taking preparation to commit robbery in the area, a team of police launched a drive there at about 2:30 am.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the gang members opened fire at them, prompting the police personnel to retaliate that triggered a gunfight, leaving one of the gang members injured with bullets. However, his other associates managed to flee the scene.
The injured was rushed to Jessore General Hospital where doctors declared him dead. Police said, they recovered some sharp weapons and rope from the spot.
