Dhaka, July 12 – Condemned accused and former state minister for home Lutfozzaman Babar has been released from jail for six hours under parole on Tuesday evening, said a senior prison officer.Contacted, senior jail super of Kashimpur central jail-1 Subrata Kumar Bala told UNB that Babar was taken to Dhaka from Kashimpur central jail-1 of Gazipur district in the morning to produce him to the first Speedy Trial Tribunal of Dhaka at the makeshift court set up in a building near the Dhaka Central in connection with August 21 grenade attack.
He was released under parole at around 6:30 pm from Dhaka for six hours so that he could attend Namaj-e-Janaza of his mother at a mosque of Gulshan in Capital Dhaka. He will be taken back to the jail after six hours, he said.
Sources said the mother of the former state minister died on Monday night at a city hospital.
On January 30 in 2014, the Chittagong Metropolitan Special Tribunal-1, sentenced 14 persons to death, including Babar for involvement in the smuggling of 10 truckloads of arms into Bangladesh. The consignment was intercepted on April 2, 2004, from the jetty of Chittagong Urea Fertilizer Limited.
At least 24 people, including Awami League’s women affairs secretary Ivy Rahman, wife of late president Zillur Rahman, were killed and 300 others injured in the grenade attack on a anticrime rally then Opposition Awami League at Bangabandhu Avenue in the city on August 21 in 2014. Then opposition leader Shiekh Hasina was also among the injured.
