Bangladesh blow Namibia away in ICC U-19 WC


Bangladesh Under-19 team recorded an overwhelming 8-wicket victory over Namibia to emerge group A champions in the ICC U19 World Cup held on Tuesday at Sheikh Kamal International Cricket Stadium.Earlier, the young Bangladeshi spinners tore apart Namibian batting lineup, restricting them to just 65 runs in 32.5 overs, after Bangladesh skipper Mehedi Hasan Miraz decided to field first.

The Bangladesh’s bowlers threatened early inroad as medium pacer Mohammad Saifuddin dismissed opener Loftie-Eaton struck in the fourth over of the match. The batsman tried to guide the ball, short of length outside off, through gully but straight to Nazmul Hossain Shanto at second slip. Shanto took the catch spectacularly jumping to his right.In the sixth over, Namibian skipper Zane Green was run out without disturbing the scoreboard. Later, spinners took control of the match with Saleh Ahmed Shawon, skipper Miraz, who is now the highest wicket taker at U19 level, and Ariful Islam taking two wickets apiece, while Saeed Sarkar captured one wicket.Two Namibian batsmen- Niko Davin and Lohan Louwrens – able to reach the double figure in the match.To chase the paltry target of 66 runs, Bangladesh however lost both openers in just 13 runs, but a brilliant 53-run unbeaten partnership between Nazmul Hossain Shanto and Joyraz Sheik took Bangladesh at home at ease in 16 overs.Saleh Ahmed Shawon of Bangladesh was adjudged the player of the match for his brilliant bowling performance.Bangladesh will play Nepal it he quarter-final scheduled to be held on Friday (Feb 5) at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
