Parliament on Sunday passed the ‘Bangladesh Water Bill, 2013’, seeking coordinated development, management, extraction, distribution, usage, protection and conservation of water resources in the country. Water Resources Minister Ramesh Chandra Sen piloted the Bill that was passed by voice vote.
In the objectives of the bill it was stated that considering water as a limited resources it is needed to formulate a plan for water extracting, development and using.
According to the Bill, there will be a 35-member ‘National Water Resources Council’ headed by the Prime Minister.
The Council will be empowered to formulate the National Water Policy. It will also be empowered to circulate orders for protecting water and other matters.
Anyone who will violate the law will be punished by maximum five years of imprisonment or maximum Tk 10,000 as fine, or by both. UNB
