BD Election commission for more security around its offices

The alarm has been raised as the commission is gearing up to hold six city polls and the eleventh general elections due between Oct 30, 2018 and Jan 28, 2019.

The commission wrote to the inspector general of police on Thursday.

“The offices of the chief election commissioner and election commissioners, the EC secretariat and the Electoral Training Institute are located at Dhaka’s Agaragaon,” says the letter signed by the deputy secretary at the EC secretariat.

“The places are frequented by ministers, MPs and VIPs from home and abroad.

“The Election Commission, which is a sensitive and constitutional body, has already started preparing for polls. Some militant groups are plotting terror attacks, as per reports published in the media,” says the letter.

The commission urged the police to take measures to ensure security of the chief election commissioner and the election commissioners.

The commission had beefed up security around its offices in the capital and at all the electoral areas across the country before the 2013 general elections that the BNP boycotted.

The ruling Awami League and the BNP are still at loggerheads over the nature of the poll-time government.

Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda will preside over the commission that will organise the Rangpur city votes due in December this year.

Five other city balloting will be held before the parliamentary elections next year.
