BD-India bus route operators appointment halted

Dhaka – The High Court Division of the Supreme Court on Wednesday halted tender to appoint operators for five India-Bangladesh bus-routes for a month as the circular for tender was published violating Section 15 of the Public Procurement Act.The vacation bench of Justice Md Rezaul Haque and Justice Mohammad Ullah passed the order hearing a writ petition.
Md Mozammel Hoque Chowdhury, Secretary General of the Jatri Kalyan Samit filed the writ petition. The petitioner said bus operators including government-run Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation- BRTC were charging Tk 1,700 to Tk 2,000 from every passenger of the Dhaka-Kolkata- Dhaka route.
As per the conditions of the protocol signed between the two governments, the fare should be $ 11 equivalent to Tk 920 including the breakfast. The irregularity affects about 8,000 passengers who travel regularly, Mozammel added.
Barrister ABM Altaf Hossain who moved the petition said, complying with the earlier direction of the High Court, BRTC issued a letter to Mozammel on August 2 in a bid to settle the issue. But, on August 30, BRTC’s tender committee held a meeting and asked the bidders to go to Motijheel Depot with two buses. Mozammel then filed another writ petition as the tender process was being taken ahead. – Special Correspondent
