Bangladesh are gearing up for the World Twenty20 in a four-match series against Zimbabwe in Khulna. On Nov 28, 2006, the teams made their debut in the shortest format against each other at Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium, where they will play the first match on Friday. The situation has changed quite a bit since then. Identifying the best team combinations for the World T20 is the focus for both sides now.The match is set to start at 3pm Bangladesh Standard Time.Coaches and captains of both teams hinted at looking to fine-tune their squads in the series, which has been shifted to T20 Internationals from Tests for the forthcoming schedule.”Victory definitely gets top priority in any international match. But we still have much to learn in this format. We will try new things to find a perfect combination,” Mashrafe Bin Mortaza said on Thursday.”Whether we get a result out of it is a different issue. We feel that this is the time for trying such things,” the captain said.Zimbabwe, on the other hand, come into the series following defeats in ODI and T20I series against Afghanistan in the United Arab Emirates. They, too, are keen to test out things of their own to return to the winning ways before T20’s showcase event in March.”We will try a number of combinations in this series…that’s why we have a 16 players instead of 15 in our squad. It is basically a preparation for the (T20) World Cup,” said Zimbabwe skipper Elton Chigumbura. In wanting to experiment, the teams scheduled the first-ever T20 series between two Test playing nations that would see more than three matches. An ICC rule previously stated that a series would not have more than three matches. After the restrictions were lifted, only the associate nations have played more matches.
Bangladesh, who have Shakib Al Hasan and Soumya Sarkar back in the fold, are blooding in three young talents in the squad.Bangladesh Premier League find wicketkeeper batsman Nurul Hasan has been called up for late assaults in a possible No. 7 role. But Shuvagata Hom Chowdhury, too, has made a strong claim for the position.Young Mustafizur Rahman, Al-Amin Hossain and Mashrafe himself are for the first-choice pace battery with another BPL revelation pacer Abu Haider Rony available for the experiment.Despite not getting a spot in the squad for the first two T20s, Mohammad Shahid, Taskin Ahmed, Mosaddek Hossain and Saqlain Sajib are there if Bangladesh opt to tinker more with their lineup.Zimbabwe have Vusi Sibanda, Sean Williams and Brian Vitori back in the squad but are without pacer Tinashe Panyangara.Lacking firepower in the bowling, the visitors need to back legspinner Graeme Cremer up with the pace of Luke Jongwe, Neville Madziva, and Vitori. The surface is that of a typical Khulna track while the boundaries are a bit shorter. Around 150 should be an ideal total for the team batting first but the dew factor may upend the equation.
