The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) President M Atiqul Islam on Saturday requested the opposition and ruling parties to reach a consensus that helps maintain a sound environment for trade and investment in the country..
“A consensus between ruling and opposition parties is urgently needed. We’re not involved in politics. We want to do business uninterruptedly. We want to export without any obstacles,” Islam said. The chief of the powerful apparel sector trade body made the call at the closing ceremony of the 24th Batexpo at Sonargaon Hotel in the city.
Atiqul Islam sought cooperation from all, including politicians, to set up new manufacturing units in the country. “We’re giving you our word, you give us support, and together we’ll ensure our stronger position in global RMG market.” He also sought consensus on all national issues where government, opposition, civil society and others will have active participation. Repeating an often-used phrase denoting the RMG industry as a ‘golden goose’ for Bangladesh’s economy, the BGMEA President said, “We’re observing with great sorrow that efforts are there to kill this goose.”
He demanded creating favorable environment and bringing down bank interest rate to tolerable level, building garment economic zone soon and a separate ministry for the RMG sector. BNP Standing Committee member Dr Khondkar Mosharraf Hossain, BNP Chairperson’s adviser Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, BNP leader Dr Osman Faruk, BGMEA vice President Reaz Bin Mahmood, among others, spoke on the occasion. – UNB
