An explosion occurred in front of Election Commissioner Shah Nawaz’s house amid countrywide protests by Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.
The bomb went off at around 6am Wednesday, said Shah Nawaz.
“I heard an explosion in front of my house in Azimpur,’ he said, “I live on the fifth floor. The blast was next to the stairway beside the gate.”
The explosion caused ‘some panic’ among the building’s residents.
Top police officials were examining the site and initiating measures, he said.
Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the BNP’s student wing, has called for nationwide agitations to protest the incarceration of Sultan Salauddin Tuku, its former president.
EC officials said the protocol and protection branch of the police headquarters proposed that security be strengthened and CCTV cameras installed at the residences of the Chief Election Commissioner and his four election commissioners.
The Ministry of Public Works allotted Tk 23,00,000 for each of their houses to install the CCTVs.
But the security equipments were not installed even after three months, said Shah Nawaz.
“EC Secretariat is overseeing all these matters. We will know what happens by Thursday.”
