Meanwhile, addressing a view exchange meeting with BNP-backed mayoral and councillor candidates of Dhaka North City Corporation, party standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed yesterday said that the forthcoming city poll is an “acid test” for both the government and the Election Commission.
“We shall be there in the electoral process till its last moment whatever the obstacles. The people will discharge their agonies and resentment by making a silent revolution through ballots,” he said.Moudud said the aim of the BNP and 20-party alliance to take part in the city polls is to strengthen the ongoing movement.
He accused the EC of showing discriminatory behaviour to the BNP backed candidates and said councilor candidate for ward number 11 was arrested and police raided homes of the candidates to harass them on the other hand ruling party backed candidates are being acquitted from their cases.
Moudud, who is also coordinator of election steering committee for DNCC, said the BNP backed candidates would win the polls with huge margin of votes if the election are held in a free and fair manner.
Standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan, vice chairman Chowdhury Kamal Ibne Yusuf, Altaf Hossain Chowdhury, Selima Rahman, Barrister Shajahan Omar, Inam Ahmed Chowdhury, Mohammaed Shajahan, mayor candidate Tabith Awal, his mother Nasrin Fatema Awal and member secretary of Adarsha Dhaka Andolon Shawkat Mahmud, among others, were present at the meeting held at BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office.
Leaders of different parties of the 20-party alliance, including Shafiul Alam Prodhan of Jagpa, were also present at the meeting. – Staff Reorter
