A local leader of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was shot to death by miscreants at Shyamnagar Bazar in Sadar upazila of Jessore on Tuesday, UNB news agency reported.
The victim was identified as Idris Ali, 45, a leader of Hashimpur union unit of BNP and son of late Hashem Ali of Shyammnagar village in the upazila.
Locals and hospital sources said a group of miscreants, numbering three and riding a motorcycle, fired three rounds of bullets at Idris while he was playing carom in Shyamnagar Bazar around 6:30pm, leaving him injured.
Later, the trio fled the scene firing several rounds of blank shots.
The injured was taken to Jessore 250-Bed General Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
Contacted, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station Ilias Hossain said they had heard about the killing of a BNP leader.
Meanwhile, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir alleged that ruling Awami League men killed Idris Ali.
“Killing of Idris Ali is a manifestation of AL’s brazen terrorism through which it wants to grab all chairman posts in the ensuing union council elections,” said the BNP leader.
Condemning the killing, Fakhrul demanded exemplary punishment of the killers.
