Bnp-led 20-party demo staged against gas, power price hike


BNP-led 20-party alliance yesterday staged demonstrations and bought out processions in different parts of the city and elsewhere in the country protesting price hike power and gas.
However, police allegedly charged batons on 20-party leaders and activists in different places to foil the 20-party demonstration leaving a number of people injured.
In Dhaka, BNP and front organisaitons and allies brought our sudden processions in different points of the city to avoid police obstructions. Police arrested BNP leader Hero from the procession in Motijheel area.Party sources alleged that police attacked on 20-party demonstrations in different districts including Rajshahi, Barisal, Manikganj, Khagrachori, Jenaidah, Faridpur, Pirojpur, Kurigram, Munshiganj, Mymensingh, Shariatpur and Naogaon.
BNP standing committee member Gioyeshwar Chandra Roy told reporters that they could not stage big demonstration in the city due to aggressive action of police.
He said police took position at different strategic points where the 20-party alliance wanted to stage demonstration. In this regard he mentioned that police locked the Jinjira BNP office up after it was opened in the morning.
“We don’t want to observe our programme peacefully. The alliance is watching the attitude of the government by observing the programme peacefully,” he said.
As per decision taken at 20-party meeting on August 30, BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan announced the programme on Wednesday.
The alliance also brought out processions in different places in the city including Tejgaon, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Khilgaon, Banani, Dhanmondi, Mohammadpur, Dakkhin Khan, Mugda, DMCH area, Shympur, Mirpur, Bongsal, Paltan, Sutrapur and Dhaka Judge Court area.
Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal brought out a procession from Gymnasium gate that terminated in front of Shahid Minar. Police foiled another JCD procession brought out from Shahbagh.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, an ally of the alliance, brought out a procession at Kazipara in Mirpur in the morning.- Staff Reporter
