BNP on Wednesday extended its full support to the eight-hour hartal to be enforced by left-leaning parties on Thursday protesting the fresh power tariff hike.
BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi came up with the announcement while speaking at a human chain programme.
Swadhinata Forum, a pro-BNP platform, arranged the programme in front of the Jatiya Press Club.
“The left parties are going to enforce a hartal from 6am to 2pm tomorrow (Thursday). We think the hartal is very logical and it was called in the interest of people. I, on behalf of BNP, extend full support to the programme,” Rizvi said.
He said the government raised the power tariff as it is least bothered about public sufferings.
Earlier on Nov 23, Ganatantrik Bam Morcha, Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) and Socialist Party of Bangladesh (BSD) jointly called the hartal for Thursday protesting the fresh power price hike.
The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (Berc) on an average raised the power tariff by 5.3 percent or Tk. 0.35 per unit which will come into effect from December.
