The BNP on Tuesday strongly criticised Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s statement that the party has elected two accused in its two topmost positions.Party acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir termed the prime minister’s statement as beyond political decorum.
On the other hand, standing committe member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain claimed that the prime minister’s herself was also accused in a number of cases.
The BNP leaders comments came from two separate functions a day after the prime minister at a rally at Suhrawady Udyan on Monday described the reelection of Khaleda Zia as BNP chairperson and Tarique Rahman as party’s senior vice chairman as a stage-managed drama and said now two accused are this party’s top leaders.
“Whom they (BNP) have actually elected– there two accused, one (Khaleda) is an accused in a case of misappropriating orphans’ money and another (Tarique) in the August 21 grenade case– and his (Tarique’s) name is also there in Interpol’s wanted list…if this is the case, what this party can deliver!” she told a public rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in the city marking the historic March 7 speech of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Earlier on Sunday, Khaleda Zia and her son Tarique Rahman were reelected the party’s chairperson and senior vice chairman respectively unopposed before the party’s national council session.
Inaugurating a procession of Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal to mark the International Women’s Day, Fakhrul said that the statement has no relations with the truth.
“Democratic leaders had been implicated in many cases during democratic movement and they have become accused. So, the allegations brought against party chairperson and senior vice chairman are beyond the political etiquatte,” he said.
BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, among others, alsp spoke on the occasison. Selima Rahman, Noor-e-Ara Safa, Shirin Sultana, and others took part in the procession that paraded different roads in the city.
Addressing a discussion meeting at Jatiya Press Club, Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said the prime minister has no jurisdiction to describe the two top BNP leaders as accused since she was also accused in many cases.
He calimed that the Awami League chief was accused in 15 cases including NIKO and Mig-29 corruption cases.
“We don not know whether she (Sheikh Hasina) had received bails in these cases or they were withdrawn but she has become the prime minister,” he said.
The BNP organised the meeting to mark 10th anniversary of Tarique Rahman’s imprisonment.
Presided over by BNP vice chairman Shah Moazzem Hossain, the meeting also addressed, among others, by Selima Rahman, Advocate Joynal Abedin, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed, Fazlul Haque Milon and Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal. – News
