BNP seen in the streets after a long time


BNP leaders and supporters were out in the streets yesterday after a long absence to celebrate the 45th Victory Day.The Victory Day procession led by party acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir brought out from in front of the BNP central office in the afternoon and terminated at Malibagh intersection after parading different city roads.
The BNP that had boycotted the January 5 general polls was not seen holding any rallies on the city streets or any ground as what they said they were permitted to hold the rallies.
They were only confined to their party offices and indoor auditorium to hold indoor meetings.
Party chairperson Khaleda Zia was ultimately confined at her Gulshan office fir about three months due to police obstructions as she tried to join a rally in front party central office to mark first year of January 5 polls.
The BNP-led 20-party alliance also continued with its road blockade programme during the period that left about 100 people killed and injured many.
Party leaders and activists were seen celebrating the Victory Day with cheers as they achieved a victory to be out on the streets.
BNP joint secretary general Md Shajahan, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed, Fazlul Haque Milon and Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, among others, joined the rally.
Addressing the before it set out, Fakhrul Islam Alamgir hoped the rally would help write a new chapter for movement to restore the democracy.
“The people today are celebrating the Victory Day in an undemocratic and suppurating atmosphere.
Police gave permission for holding the rally with number of conditions to maintain law and order.
Earlier, former premier Khaleda Zia along with her senior party colleagues placed wreath at the National Mausoleum in honour of the fallen freedom fighters and later she also visited the mazar of party founder Ziaur Rahman and offered prayer there.
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee member Brigadier General (retd) ASM Hannan Shah, vice-chairman Selima Rahman and joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, were present among others.
BNP’s associate bodies such as Jubo Dal, Chhatra Dal and Sramik Dal also paid respects to the party founder by laying wreaths.
