British HC meets Khaleda, hopes polls will be violence-free


British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Robert W Gibson yesterday welcomed BNP’s decision to endorse candidates for the forthcoming City Corporation Elections allowing the electorate a real democratic choice, and hoped that the campaign would be conducted without violence.His remarks came in statement issued by British High Commission following Gibson’s meeting with BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia at her Gulshan residence yesterday.
Noting that it was the responsibility of the Election Commission to ensure full compliance with all the rules and regulations, he also hoped that the Election Commission would play its due role in the management of these elections.
The British High Commissioner welcomed Khaleda’s decision to reduce tensions by returning to her home and expressed hopes that other confidence building measures would follow.
It was first visit by a diplomat after the return of Khaleda Zia to her home after spending 92 days at her political office where Gibson also met her earlier.
Briefing reporters BNP standing committee member Abdul Moeen Khan said it was courtesy call but the current political crises including the prevailing political situation were came up for discussion during the meeting began at 4:55pm.
BNP chairperson’s adviser Sabihuddin Ahmed, among others, was present during the meeting. – Staff Reporter
