Dhaka – The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) committee on Uber- which was formed to legalize the global taxi hailing app service in Dhaka- is trying to find ways for the government to get revenue from this service.During a committee meeting yesterday, the members decided to ask National Board of Revenue (NBR) to formulate a taxation guideline for the transport regulator which it can impose on Uber.
A member of the committee who was present in the meeting told The Independent that the services that Uber provides cannot be categorized with the existing acts. The member said that it didn’t fall under the category of neither taxicab service nor rental car service.
As there are complexities in determining under which category Uber transport should fall, the transport regulator cannot formulate a guideline for the service.
Because of that, the committee is going to formally ask the NBR to aid then in preparing a taxation guideline, said the member.
It is to be noted that within two months of its operation on Dhaka Streets, has increased its fare by 20%-22%. It is still plying on road illegally as per the declaration of BRTA. – Staff Reporter
