Campaign gains momentum in Dhaka city

The election campaign in Dhaka city gained momentum on Sunday with Mayoral candidates scaling up house to house visits, and addressing voters and well-wishers at different city centres.
Campaign posters and banners have filled the capital city. However, people from different wards in the city said Bnp-backed candidates for councillor elections were not getting the opportunity to campaign as freely as their AL-backed rivals, as police haunted for Bnp-supported candidates who had cases filed against them during the recent movement.Dhaka South City Corporation mayoral candidateSayeed Khokon campaigned at Dholaikhal, Sutrapur and Kotowali areas of thecity.“Former mayor Mirza Abbas is like my uncle. He was also administer once. You know better the development work carried out by him. I want to be like your son, and not like the city mayor,” he added.
On the other hand, Dhaka North City Corporation mayoral aspirant Anisul claimed he will work for the next five years to keep his reputation intact. “I have been a businessman and an organiser for the past 25 years. I have earned a reputation as an honest man. I will not spoil myreputation if I am elected as the mayor,” he told hundreds of slum dwellers atKalyanpur Pora.
“Many people will come to you asking for vote. They willoffer temptations or threaten you. Do not cast your
vote on the basis of these temptations or threats. Have trust in yourself and cast your vote for the onewho will work for you,” he added. He began his electioneering from Mirpur Bangla College and went to Kalyanpur slum through Paikpara around 11 am.
“You will measure the level playing field. She (Khaleda) is the chief of a party, who came down for mass campaigning. But people know who is working and who is not,” he added.
In a related development, BNP-backed mayoral candidate MirzaAbbas’ wife, Afroza, is scheduled to announce her husband’s electoral manifestoat National Press Club around 11 am today.
