Chased by ‘cops’, slum dweller drowns in city

A slum dweller drowned in a water body after being ‘chased by cops’ at a slum in the capital’s Mirpur area on Saturday. The deceased was identified as Abdul Khaleque, 40, son of late Abul Kalam of Rangpur Sadar upazila and a resident of Block-T of Barek Sardar Basti (slum) in Mirpur-6.Sources at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) said an executive magistrate Dhaka Electric Supply Company Ltd with the help of police conducted a drive at the slum around 11 am to disconnect illegal power connections. However, the slum dwellers locked in an altercation with the team which prompted police to charge baton on them. Being chased by the law enforcers, three slum dwellers, including Khaleque, jumped into the water body. Though two of them managed to swim ashore again, Khaleque remained missing. Later, fire service men rescued him in an unconscious state from the water body and rushed him to the DMCH where doctors declared him dead. The body was kept at the DMCH morgue for autopsy. – UNB
