College students stage demo for publication of their results

Dhaka, 18 Jan – A group students of seven colleges under the University of Dhaka staged a protest by blocking streets at Nilkhet for three hours on Thursday to press for the announcement of exam results immediately.About 500 students gathered at the New Market intersection at 11am and blocked the road till 2pm causing heavy traffic jam.
Traffic came to a halt around Azimpur, DU campus, Science Laboratory and BGB headquarters during the protests as the road was blocked.
The students urged the authorities to publish the results of second-year final exams under the 2014-15 session, arrange exams for third-year.
Protesters left the streets at 2pm while after DU Vice-Chancellor Prof Akhteruzzaman arrived at the scene and assured them of meeting their demand.
Saidul Islam , student of Titumir college said , “We haven’t got our results in one year which made us frustrated, we want our result this month.”
Delay in the publication of results is creating session jam in our academic life and it is really an injustice to us , it makes us to make this kind of protest, he added.
Dhaka University is empowered to conduct admission tests, set curriculum and and make examination routine for these colleges.
The education ministry affiliated the colleges with Dhaka University in February last year. The colleges are Dhaka College, Eden Mohila College, Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Kabi Nazrul College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Women College, Mirpur Government Bangla College and Government Titumir College.
Last year in July, Titumir College student Siddiqur Rahman lost his eyesight after being hit by a teargas shell lobbed by police to disperse a crowd of student demonstrators.
The students of the seven colleges had gathered at the Shahbagh Square calling on the authorities to arrange their exams. – Staff Reporter
