Conflicting press conferences at SC Bar on Justice Sinha


Dhaka – Leaders of Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association on Saturday held two conflicting press conferences over Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha’s statement that he made before leaving for Australia.Lawyers of pro-BNP and pro-Awami League also got locked in an altercation and a tense situation emerged when vice president Md Ajiullah tried to hold a press conference in the Bar Association auditorium after Bar president Joynul Abedin held a press conference first under the banner of the Bar.
Pro-BNP lawyers obstructed Ajiullah from holding the press conference in the Bar Association auditorium. Joynul Abedin questioned his authority to hold a press conference under the banner of the association after the president of the bar himself addressed one under the same banner on the same day. Later, Ajiullah held a press conference at the entrance of the association auditorium.
In his press conference statement, SCBA president Joynul Abedin called upon the President as head of the state to come forward and safeguard the judiciary.
The Chief Justice is the guardian of the constitution. It is regretful that the Prime Minister has been egoistic on him, he said. He also called upon the premier to come forward to save the judiciary by shunning, what he termed as her “ego.”
Joynul Abedin, who is also vice chairman of the BNP, called upon the acting Chief Justice to go slow for the sake of upholding the rule of law and independence of the judiciary. In this regard, he mentioned the Chief Justice’s opinion that no acting chief justice had taken any major decision.
Bar Association general secretary Barrister Mahbubuddin Khokan questioned that law minister’s claim that the CJ was sick. He said the law ministry had prepared the letter where the CJ was shown sick. He demanded resignations of the law minister and the attorney general.
BNP standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Bar association vice president Umme Kulsum Begum, Shamima Sultana, Sheikh Tahsin Ali were present at the press conference.
In his dissenting press conference Bar Association vice president Md disowned the statement of the Bar president saying that the former’s statement focused on political agenda. The Chief Justice went aboard on leave willingly. He will come back after his leave and take part in trial proceedings, he said.
On administrative change, he disagreed with the chief Justice statement saying that the acting chief justice who has been given charge of chief justice in accordance with article 97 would be able to do all activities including administrative and trial proceedings. – Staff Reporter
