Crops on several thousand bighas of land as well as a number of fish farms under Bhubanbaria union in Sathia upazila were inundated as a cross dam on the Ichamati River fell apart after some influential people tried to bore in pipes through the dam on Thursday night.   The affected people alleged that the cross dam broke down when local Awami League leader Moyen Uddin and his affiliates tried to bore in pipes
through the cross dam of a canal linked to the river to guide water to his fish enclosure.   Anisur Rahman of Ataikula village in the area told UNB that most of the fields with ripe crops, including paddy, chilly and pointed gourd, were submerged as water flashed through the broken dam.   Hundreds of acres of crop fields and a number of fish farms at Bbulbaria, Dapunia, Jagannathpur, Brihaspatipur, Laxmipur, Sripur, Shibpur, Guramnabasi and Madhabpur villages were remained under water.   The backwater area was leased out to Moyen Uddin and other influential people, including Mostafa Mollah, Tofaz Uddin, Mokbul Hossain, Abdus Samad and Ranju Mridha, for fish firming. Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) executive engineer (Bera office) Rakibur Rahman said the I-3 cross dam on the Ichamati broke down as a few locals tried to cut it to guide the water to their fish
farms.   “We’ve filed a general diary with the police station against the people involved in it,” he said.   Sathia UNO Shafiqul Islam said he has already visited the affected area and necessary steps will be taken against the persons who are involved in the destruction of the dam.    -UNB
