Cyclone ‘Phailin’ likely to cross Orissa coast


The very severe cyclonic storm ‘Phailin’ with estimated centre pressure of 945 hPa over the west-central Bay and adjoining east-central Bay moved slightly northeastwards over the same area. It was centred at 6pm on Friday about 775 kms southwest of Chittagong port, 710 kms southwest of Cox’s Bazar port and 665 kms south-southwest of Mongla port. It is likely to in a northwesterly direction and may cross Orissa coast of India near Puri by Saturday evening, said special bulletin No-18 of the Met Office. Maximum sustained wind speed within 74 kms of the storm centre is about 190 kmh rising to 210 kmh in gusts or squalls. Sea will remain very rough. The maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar and Mongla have been advised to keep hoisted distant warning signal No 2. Under the peripheral influence of the cyclone, gusty or squally wind may affect the North Bay. All fishing boats and trawlers over the North Bay have been advised to remain in shelter till further notice. – UNB
