Travelling on the Dhaka-Ishurdi rail route in Sirajganj has become very much hazardous causing frequent accidents especially for absence of gatemen at most of its level crossings. As many as 85 people have been killed in different types of train accidents in the last three years on the rail route. There are 51 level crossings on the 92- kilometre rail route but there is not a single gateman posted at most of the crossings. Of the 51 level crossings, 45 are approved while the rest six are unapproved.Although the number of level crossings has been increased in the last several years, manpower and monitoring have not been raised
accordingly, and consequently accidents on the rail route are occurring at a higher rate. Form January, 2011 till October this year, 85 people have been killed in different rail- related accidents on the route and of the victims,64 are males and 21 females. They were killed being knocked down by trains, falling under the wheels of trains, falling down from the roofs of trains or due to faults at the level crossings.Akbar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Sirajganj Government Railway Police, said the number of deaths is increasing due to careless movement, suicide and absence of gateman at most level crossings.
Bangladesh railway deputy directorate engineer (road) Abdul Mannan said it is not possible to post gatemen at all level crossings. -UNB, Sirajganj
