‘Drug smuggler’ killed in Joypurhat ‘gunfight’


Joypurhat – An alleged drug smuggler was killed in a reported gunfight between his cohorts and members of Border Guard
Bangladesh (BGB) and police at Ratanpur village in Panchbibi upazila early Thursday.The deceased was identified as Tariqul, son of Ayez Uddin, a resident of Chak Shimulia village of the upazila.Assistant Superintendent of Police Ashok Kumar Pal said acting on a tip-off, a joint team of the border force and police conducted a drive at Shaluar Math in the area when a gang of smugglers, including Tariqul, was staying there at about 4:30am.Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the gang members opened fire on the law enforcers, prompting them to retaliate that triggered a gunfight.At one stage, Tariqul was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while his associates managed to flee the scene.Two BGB men and a police constable were also injured during the gunfight.They were admitted to Joypurhat Adhunik Hospital.The law enforcers recovered huge sharp weapons and 200 bottles of Phensidyl syrup from the spot.Tariqul was wanted in 11 cases, including for smuggling, with Panchbibi Police Station, the ASP added.
