The BNP yesterday held the Election Commission (EC) responsible for the loss of lives during the violence marking the first phase of Union Parishad polls. The main opposition political party also demanded the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and members of the EC to resign taking the responsibility of their failure to ensure a proper election in a peaceful manner.
Briefing reporters at party central office at Naya Paltan, BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi observed that there would have not been losses of so many lives if the EC could exercise its constitutional authority.
He alleged that the ruling party cadres are still creating a situation of terror by carrying out attacks and vandalism in the respective areas.
Rizvi said the CEC had accused the administration of not providing expected cooperation to them warning that police would be held responsible if any violence takes place during the election.
He regretted that the CEC claimed that the election was largely fair. It means that he is suffering from mental tension, he added
The EC had failed to play any role during the polls rather passed it through some statements.
He claimed that a total of 22 persons including three candidates were killed in violence, at shooting by police, RAB and BGB personal and heinous attacks by ruling party cadres following the announcement of election schedule.
He demanded the withdrawal of warrant of arrest against 17 BNP leaders and activist including Barkatullah Bulu, Ruhul Quddus Talukder Dulu and Saiful Islam.
Dr AZM Zahid Hossain, Khairul Kabir Khokan, among others, were present on the occasion.
