Speakers at a discussion today underscored the need for ensuring animal protein for all citizens aimed at building healthier and brighter nation.They said we have to increase consumption of eggs and chicken at least two times to reduce malnutrition. Bangladesh Poultry Industries Coordination Committee organised the discussion “Vision-2021: Safe Eggs and Chicken and its challenge” at Bangataj auditorium here. Mentioning Gazipur as the capital of poultry, parliament member Zahid Ahsan Russel said, “We have to increase consumption of animal protein to build meritorious and healthier nation.”In his speech as the chief guest, he said human body sufferers various diseases due to lack of nutrition.Russel urged all guardians to provide boiled eggs to students instead of fried items as tiffin.Referring the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), Dr M Ali Haider, civil surgeon of Gazipur, said a person needs to consume at least 104 eggs every year, but Bangladeshis consumers eat only 45 to 55 on an average and Japanese people consume 600 eggs annually.He said a Bangladeshi consumer eats only 3.63 kilogram of chicken per year, while a citizen in a developed country consume 45-50 kilogram of chicken annually.Chaired by convener of Bangladesh Poultry Industries Coordination Committee (BPICC) Mashiur Rahman, the discussion was also addressed, among others, by Superintendent of Police in Gazipur M Harun or Rashid, president of Bangladesh Poultry Industries Association Dr MM Khan, Livestock official Dr M Mehedy Hossain and treasurer of BPICC Dr Nazrul Islam.The speakers said a Bangladeshi consumes 26 grams less chicken than the daily intake recommended by the FAO of the United Nations and the World Health Organisation, describing it as the main obstacle to overcome the problem of physical unfitness.BSS, Gazipur
